The escape pods should be flush with the hull, but they are instead slightly sunk into the hull. This is most noticeable when it comes to the escape pods. Second, some things were printed as recessed when they likely shouldn’t have been. First, the torpedo launchers didn’t print as cleanly as they could’ve which in turn didn’t allow the artists to paint them red like in the uploaded pictures. The model is not flawless as I do have a few minor nitpicks. The ship’s name shows up on the aft side of the torpedo pod and there’s even a United Federation of Planets emblem on the pylons. There are a few other places where such details, however tiny, are included and make the model all the more impressive for including them. My favorite detail is the painted shuttlebay landing lines and the ship’s name/registry above the shuttlebay doors. They are actually cylindrical projections on the model of the ship so they can be imagined as tiny cannons. Those dots on either side of the hangar doors are where the dual beams and dual phaser cannons shoot out from in the STO game. The new details show up especially well in the forward hangar bay doors and the rear shuttlebay. Everything feels smooth where it should be, and there’s no way to tell that this is a 3D printed model.įortunately for me (and anyone else wanting to get an Akira-class starship printed), STO remastered the Akira-class before they introduced the 3D printing option. If I didn’t know better, I’d say it was sculpted out of hardwood rather than printed from layers of resin. The level of detail is nothing short of amazing! Every grid line on the hull shows well as if it’s been etched with laser precision. I don’t know if the wait time has gotten shorter or longer since then, but suffice to say, you need to have the patience of a Vulcan high priest if you plan to do this. Even though I ordered just a couple days after the option was introduced, it took over 4 months before I finally received my ship-much, much longer than the 3 to 6 weeks that the 3D printing service first estimated. Now that my ship has finally arrived, I decided to do a review for anyone else that’s still considering getting such a ship from STO.Ī big caveat I have to mention is that, while the end result was everything that was promised, the time it took for me to receive my ship was a huge negative. Since my ship is a kitbash, there was no chance I would ever find a model of it anywhere else, so the decision to spend the money for a 3D printed ship was a no brainer for me. I jumped at the opportunity as I’d always wanted a model of my ship that I could hold in my hands as a memento of my time playing the game. On May 16, 2018, Star Trek Online introduced an option where a player could 3D print ships from the game through a 3rd party service.
